The Full Story
A few years ago there were always 3 things in my purse: my house keys, my wallet and a common stomach pain medicine called Viadil/Buscopan.
Having regular stomach pain was normal so I used to carry medicine everywhere. Even though I had seen many doctors over the years the response was always the same: everything looks ok, so if it hurts, just take some pain meds.
On the outside I looked pretty normal and somebody that nobody would ever think had health issues. I was thin and in good shape, worked out often and always competed for my school's athletics team throughout my school and high school years.
But at times things would just be crazy. I remember I once ended up in the emergency room because the stomach pain was so bad I couldn't stand up, I was stuck in a bent over position out of pure pain. Again, after many tests everything seemed ok. They said - 'It's probably just gas' so they sent me home with a couple more meds and instructions to come back if it got even worse.
Besides regular stomach pain I also had a lot of other issues like constant headaches, regular bloating, painful menstrual periods and these wild outbursts of acne. Falling and staying asleep was hard at times and constipation was a regular condition, especially when travelling. Spending several days in bed because I was sick was at least a yearly experience.
Thinking everything is normal
At the time this all felt normal, I just didn't know any different and I thought to myself this is probably just how I am.
But after another regular episode and not wanting to keep taking any more medication a thought came up- what if I could figure this out on my own?
I quickly realised my stomach pain was heavily influenced by what I was eating and I was able to realise processed foods were the triggers. At the time I couldn't explain any of my other symptoms, but I discovered any time I ate food with lots of preservatives, dressings and oils like a bag of chips, my stomach pain would go through the roof.
The awaking
This was the first time I realised the impact food could have on my body and how I felt.
It wasn't perfect, but it was progress and as long as I stayed away from that type of food I could see a big improvement on my stomach issues.
Fast forward a couple of years and things were better, I was listening to my body and had figured many things that affected me. At least now I had some control.
At the same time, my mum had been struggling with issues of her own. She had been working out for over a year to lose the weight she had suddenly gained out nowhere and was going 6 times a week to gym classes and putting in a lot of effort, but with no results whatsoever.
I remember I joined her everyday for a couple of months and at the beggining it was torture to keep up with her, I couldn't believe she worked out so hard and she had been doing so for over a year!
I couldn't help to think why she wasn't getting any thinner? I had barely been doing the same for 2 months and was in the best shape of my life (9% body fat if you want to put a number to it).
She kind of resented me a bit and started going to doctors to see if there was something else going on. An explanation why she wasn't losing weight, but nothing showed up. After many exams and many doctors nothing seemed to be wrong. One doctor even told her she should be grateful she wasn't more overweight and that she should get used to how she looked, that it was a natural thing that came with age.
This broke my mum to the point that getting up everyday and having to choose what to wear was a constant struggle.
It wasn't until I realised how big a deal this was for her confidence that something clicked in me. If the exercise was ok, what if she wasn't eating the right way?
At the time we lived in the same house and I knew she wasn't eating unhealthy foods. I also knew she had tried many diets over the course of the year, some very restrictive like Keto diets and others that were more unknown and none of those had worked, so I had to dig a bit deeper.
I decided to dive deep into the subject and understand the biology and chemistry of weight loss and I started to consume every podcast, youtube video, article, course, research and book I could find that could help me understand what was going on. After a couple of months the pieces of the puzzle were starting to come together and I created her a special diet as well as specific exercises for her to do throughout the day.
The results were incredible.
In two months she was able to lose more weight than ever before and in three months she reached her 10kg goal. This might not seem much, but for a prediabetic person that tends to accumulate fat no matter what it was a huge accomplishment.
In the meantime I started experimenting with myself and also applied what I had learnt to try to solve my own issues. The results were also incredible.
Just as her, I thought I was mostly a healthy person, but it wasn't until I really understood my body, what it needs and what is bad for it that I could truly become a healthy person
There is not coming back
What happened is I was learning how to find the root cause of our symptoms and targeting those instead of just treating the symptoms directly as we had been doing in the past.
Since then it's my mission to help others heal in a natural way, without side effects that will transform healthy living into a lifestyle and I created this website to help others regain hope and get the results they have been struggling to get.
