What is PCOS?


PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, which is a common hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS have higher levels of male hormones (androgens) in their bodies, which can cause a range of symptoms including:


  1. Irregular menstrual cycles or no periods at all

  2. Acne

  3. Excessive hair growth on the face, chest, or back (hirsutism)

  4. Thinning hair or hair loss on the scalp

  5. Weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  6. Difficulty getting pregnant

  7. Cysts on the ovaries


There are various treatments available to manage the symptoms and improve fertility. Treatment options may include lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise,


What happens to the ovary in PCOS?


In PCOS, the ovaries may become enlarged and have a higher number of small, immature follicles (cysts) that surround the eggs. These immature follicles may not develop into mature follicles that release an egg during ovulation.
